Nikon 35mm Lens Review

Hello and welcome to my post –  The Nikon 35mm Lens Review. We will be reviewing the AF-S NIKKOR 35MM 1:1.8G lens. This is a fast prime lens with a large aperture of 1.8. It is a DX format lens, meaning it will only fit the crop sensor cameras. The angle of view of this lens is equivalent to a full frame 50mm lens. The 50mm focal length is considered natural field of view which gives your photos a more lifelike appearance.

Most camera kits are bundled  with an 18mm-55mm (1:3.5 – 5.6) zoom lens. Those lenses are fantastic lenses for outdoors and bright light situations.  However they’re not so good for indoors or where the source of light is not ideal. The large aperture of this lens will utilize the full potential of you high resolution camera sensor . A prime lens such as this one will give you extremely sharp detail with clarity.

Overall construction of the lens is good with hard poly carbonate body and metal mounts.  The focus ring is a bit flimsey, but the lens does offer auto focus which you will be utilizing most of the time. Nikon has incorporated some serious technology into this lens. Silent Wave Motor or SWM is an advancement to the auto focus system.  Aspherical lens elements or AS utilizes non-spherical surface to eliminate lens abberation. RF, Rear Focus system allows parts to move inside the back of the lens body, eliminating the change in size of the lens during focusing. This way the lens does not move in or out from the barrel.

Image Quality

The image quality of the lens is amazing considering its price point.  The large aperture is not only great for bokeh effects for portrait photography but it is also a key factor in low light situations.  This is great lens for group photos, landscape, and some wide angle shots. Close up photos are rich and vibrant with blurry background .

Overall, the lens performs very well in most lighting situations. This lens is great for both hobbyist and professionals alike. It will give you stunning  photos whether you are on  family picnic or on travel ventures. I would highly recommend adding this to your line of lenses.  It comes with one year manufacturer’s warranty. This lens is great when paired with the Nikon D5300 DSLR Camera

  1. Thanks for the review on this lens, my sister is a photographer and was mentioning getting a new lens for her camera.  i’m glad I came across your review, it answers all the questions I had on this lens and more.  I’ll be ordering it for her for sure. I just wonder is this lens compatible with other camera’s or just Nikon?

Camera manufacturers build their lenses to be used in their own line of cameras. This will only fit Nikon.  But if she has a  different brand of camera, there are similar lenses available for Canon, Pentax, Sony etc.

  2. Hi,

This sounds like a great lens, the image quality certainly does look top notch considering it is pretty reasonably priced. I’m not a professional but more of a keen hobbyist when it comes to photography, this type of lens sounds like the ideal blend of quality & price for someone like me!

  3. Hi there,

Great review, I really enjoyed the reading!

My husband loves to take pictures since he was a child and today he finally realize his dream. He is doing a professional photography course. So for his birthday, I want to offer him a gift that is related to photography. The Nikon lens looks great! My husband has a Nikon camera, so I was wondering if this lens will suit? I am sorry, but I do not know about photography:) Oh, I almost forgot. Is there a warranty? If so how long does it last?

    Thank you so much!

Hello Daniella .What Nikon camera does you husband have? Let me know the model then I will be able to tell you if it will fit or not.  It has 2 year warranty from Nikon. And don’t be sorry:).  The aim of my site is to make photography a simple language everyone can understand.

  4. Hi, Sounds like a great lens to have…you mention it works well in lower light situations, would that include dawn or dusk photos? Would using that lens actually lighten a darker dusk shot? And as you mentioned also, different crop sensor cameras have variations on the sensors….do you have a personal recommendation on a crop sensor cam you like, that would work well with the Nikon 35mm lens?

Hello  and thanks for the comment.  This lens is great at dawn and dusk photos.  It will not brighten your photos, but because it considered a fast lens, it would make you photos look more sharp and natural.  This lens is great with the Nikon D5300 Digital SLR camera.
